Echinacea ‘Knock ’Em Red’ produces broad, 4-inch flowers that open deep crimson and intensify to a glowing, electric red as it matures. The plant stands 20–24 inches tall and spreads 16–20 inches wide, forming a well-branched, upright clump with strong basal growth. Because it’s vegetatively propagated, every plant delivers the same saturated color and uniform habit. We like grouping three or five together so the color shift becomes an eye-catching focal point.
Bred for heavy flowering and sturdy stems, it carries its blooms from midsummer into late summer without collapsing. Pollinators work the flowers daily, and seedheads left in place provide fall and winter interest. Deer typically avoid it. Once established, it tolerates heat and lean soils with minimal intervention. It’s equally effective in prairie-style plantings, mixed borders, or statement patio containers.
Color Coded® Knock ’Em Red Coneflower Care
Plant in full sun for the strongest stems and most saturated color, although it will tolerate part sun. Choose soil that drains quickly and falls within a pH range of 6.0–7.5. Avoid heavy, constantly wet sites, especially in winter. Water regularly during its first season to build a deep root system, then irrigate only during extended dry periods. Skip routine fertilizing unless growth appears weak, as overly rich soil can reduce bloom production.
Deadhead selectively to encourage additional flowering, cutting stems back to a healthy set of leaves. Stop trimming in early fall to provide seedheads for birds and seasonal structure. Cut stems to the base in early spring before new shoots emerge. Divide only when clumps become crowded after several years.
Color Coded® Knock ’Em Red Coneflower Spacing
Space plants 16–20 inches apart to allow airflow and full branching. In containers, use a pot at least 16 inches wide for one plant to accommodate mature size. Pair with yarrow, ornamental grasses, and salvia for a sun-loving combination that showcases bold red with contrasting texture and height.
