Common Calamint is a hardy plant that can thrive in conditions unsuitable for most plants. Also known as Calamintha nepeta ssp. nepeta, this plant boasts dainty, white and light-purple flowers that bloom on tall stems. The flowers bloom from August until the first frost for lovely late-season color. Both the flowers and the foliage give off a sweet fragrance.
Grow Common Calamint in beds or borders. This flowering plant is at home in a cottage garden and is a good choice for hands-off gardeners since it thrives with little care. Common Calamint is drought tolerant and can easily grow in low-quality soil, so it fits right in as part of a xeriscape landscape. This herbaceous perennial grows in USDA zones 5 through 8.
Common Calamint Care
Plant Common Calamint in a sunny spot because this beauty needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. The soil should be neutral to acidic, moist, and well drained. This plant prefers consistent moisture, so water when the top several inches of soil dry out. Common Calamint is drought tolerant, but water during an extended dry period to ensure the plants thrive. Fertilization is unnecessary, but plants grown in poor soil will benefit from a dose of balanced plant food once during the spring.
Common Calamint will self-seed and can quickly overtake a garden. Many gardeners remove the spent flowers to avoid thinning out the bed later. This plant is susceptible to powdery mildew, so water near the base to keep the foliage as dry as possible.
Common Calamint Spacing
Common Calamint has a bushy, upright, mounded growth habit and will reach 12 to 14 inches tall and 15 to 18 inches wide. Create a dense and hardy mass planting by spacing plants 14 to 16 inches apart.
