Juniperus horizontalis P.C. Youngstown is commonly called compact andorra juniper and is a unique, versatile conifer with many great features. New growth emerges bright green in spring, settling into blue-green in the summer, and turns a lovely bronze-purple color in winter. The fine-textured foliage adds a perfect contrast to plants with large foliage and flowers. It is evergreen and low growing, reaching only 1 foot high, while spreading to 4 - 6 feet wide.
This juniper grows best in full to partial sun and well-draining soil. It tolerates poor soil, salt, dry heat, urban pollution and extreme cold–a true workhorse in the garden! Its flat, spreading habit makes it well suited as a groundcover, foundation planting, low-growing borders, and erosion control. These shrubs look beautiful cascading over walls and down hillsides. It is deer resistant and long-lived for up to 30 years, making it a great investment for any landscape.
Compact Andorra Juniper Care
Compact andorra juniper is adaptable to many soil conditions, including clay, sand, rocky and dry soils. It requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day and does not tolerate shade. Water regularly during the first summer and then once a week once established. It is not particular about pH level and does not require fertilizer.
This creeping shrub may require some pruning to keep its spread in check, although it naturally maintains its compact, dense shape. Pruning is best done in late winter, before new growth starts.
Compact Andorra Juniper Spacing
For groundcover use, space Compact Andorra Juniper 4 feet apart. For accent planting, space the junipers 5 feet from other plants to ensure they have room to spread. Compact andorra can be planted in a large (>18”) container to show off its fine foliage.
