The Compact Japanese Holly, Ilex crenata ‘Compacta’, is a compact ornamental evergreen shrub that makes an outstanding informal or formal low hedge. These bushes can be used as a striking accent or as a shrub border. Small yellow to white flowers appear in spring, turning into black fruit in the fall, attracting birds and other wildlife.
Generally no pruning is necessary, but can be shaped for a more formal look. These shrubs are also listed as being very deer resistant according to the University of Arkansas agriculture department.
Compact Japanese Holly Care
Water regularly to establish and during periods of extreme heat. Adaptable to various soil type but prefers a slightly acid soil. Fertilize in early spring before new growth begins. Pruning generally not necessary but responds well to shaping for a more formal look.
Compact Japanese Holly Spacing
For a hedge, plant 4 feet apart. In the shrub border, space 7 to 8 feet apart.
