Feature
The Vitis labrusca 'Concord' or Concord Seedless Grape Vine is a low-maintenance plant that is easy to grow and produces a high fruit yield. The medium-sized, blue-black grapes are seedless, juicy, and have a sweet taste. It may take a few years before the vine produces grapes, but mature plants that are well cared for can produce 20 to 40 pounds of fruit during the September harvest. The reaching, woody vine needs a trellis or support to hold it up.
Concord Seedless Grape Vine Care
This grapevine is not picky about soil and does not require much care, but performs best in well-drained loamy soil with a 5.5 - 6.5 pH. Amend the soil with organic compost or manure when planting and top-dress the soil with organic mulch each spring to support the plant and retain moisture. Prune the Concord Seedless Grape Vine during the early spring after there is no longer a threat of frost. Cut back old growth to encourage new canes and allow air to circulate around the foliage.
Growing Concord Seedless Grape Vine
Plant this vine in full sun. A southern exposure will help the plant thrive and produce a large fruit crop. Concord Seedless Grape Vine takes a few years to produce fruit, but once mature, the vine will produce a steady, yearly crop each fall.
Concord Seedless Grape Vine makes for a good container plant. Plants in containers need similar care to those in the ground, but they will need water more often. Choose a container that is 18 inches wide and has drainage because this vine does not tolerate wet feet.
Watering Concord Seedless Grape Vine
Water the Concord Seedless Grape Vine once per week. This plant likes moist soil, so apply a layer of mulch to keep the soil damp longer.
Feeding Concord Seedless Grape Vine
Feeding the Concord Seedless Grape Vine will help the plant thrive and produce an abundant crop. Advanced gardeners may want to test the soil and select a fertilizer that will complement the soil's pH. You can also use a potassium-rich fertilizer in the early spring and again six weeks later.
