The Connecticut Slate Dwarf White Pine is a dense evergreen with grey-blue needles the color of slate. The medium-length needles of the Pinus strobus grow in tight bunches, creating a very full look. This fast-growing conifer is low maintenance and naturally spreads. Use this plant to provide consistent color all year.
This conifer is a mounding upright plant that has a pyramidal growth habit. It is great for borders or as a specimen. Feature this dwarf white pine in a rock garden to provide contrast between the slate blue foliage and the hardscape or use to conceal a foundation wall. The Connecticut Slate Dwarf White Pine is a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Connecticut Slate Dwarf White Pine Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade. This plant is a fast grower, and increased light will allow it to spread more quickly. Select a spot with more shade when grown in warm regions. This evergreen will need one inch of water weekly for the first growing season but will not need as much water after it is established. Use moist but well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH.
Trim back damaged or dead growth as necessary. This plant is not a heavy feeder, but feeding the plant each spring using a slow-release fertilizer will promote more growth.
Connecticut Slate Dwarf White Pine Spacing
This upright conifer will reach 5 to 6 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide at maturity. Create a hedge and space the Connecticut Slate Dwarf White Pine 6 to 8 feet apart.
