The Constant™ Comment Bitter Root, also known as Lewisia, has long, leathery green foliage that grows in a rosette formation, creating a lush display. The greenery is lovely, but this beauty is a showstopper when it blooms. Pink flowers bloom on the ends of long stems that emerge from between the leaves. This plant maintains excellent symmetry and almost looks like it was created by a kaleidoscope when viewed from above. The Constant™ Comment Bitter Root blooms from late spring until fall.
This succulent is easy to maintain and provides color and texture to a bed or border. Since this plant has a low profile, it may be best to feature in a container so it is easier to admire the vibrant flowers while in bloom. As a succulent, this plant thrives with a certain degree of neglect. The Constant™ Comment Bitter Root grows as a perennial in USDA zones 6 through 9.
Constant™ Comment Bitter Root Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade. Soil should allow for drainage, and as a succulent, this plant does best with poor quality soil. Bitter Root likes to dry out between watering. Water the ground around the plant and avoid watering from overhead to prevent water from collecting in the crown.
Avoid fertilizing as Lewisia is not a heavy feeder. Remove damaged growth as needed; otherwise, this plant does not require much pruning.
Constant™ Comment Bitter Root Spacing
The Constant™ Comment Bitter Root has an upright growth habit and will reach 4 to 5 inches tall and 6 to 8 inches wide. Space plants 6 to 8 inches apart or grow 2 to 3 in a 12-inch container.
