Striking foliage, delicate blooms, and small berries ensure the Coolvista™ Dianella provides visual interest throughout the growing season. This plant is also known as Dianella revoluta ‘Allyn-Citation,’ blueberry lily, blue flax-lily, or black-anther flax-lily. This clump-forming ornamental grass features thin, flat blue-gray foliage that tapers to a point. Deep blue to purple inflorescences hover above the blades of grass in the spring and summer and later transition to blue-colored berries that last for several months.
Once established, this plant is very hardy and can comfortably live in various conditions. The upright, spiky foliage adds color and texture to borders, mass plantings, and containers. This easy-care plant is heat and drought tolerant, ensuring it can handle the summer heat and still look amazing. The Coolvista™ Dianella lives as a perennial in USDA zones 8 through 11.
Coolvista™ Dianella Plant Care
This plant requires full sun to part shade, and 4 to 6 hours of sunlight is enough to sustain growth. Established plants will need water during an extended drought, and newly planted plants will need water when the top few inches of the soil dry out. The soil should be well-draining and mildly acidic or neutral. Feed the plant by placing several inches of organic compost around the base during the spring or apply a slow-release fertilizer. Remove spent blooms and any damaged growth.
This plant is a perennial in warmer areas, but cover the plant if the forecast calls for chilly weather. The greenery will die back if the plant is exposed to cold weather, and if this happens, trim back the dead growth, and new foliage should appear in the spring.
Coolvista™ Dianella Plant Spacing
This spikey grass grows 1 to 2 feet tall and just as wide. Coolvista™ Dianella can be planted as close as 8 to 12 inches apart to create a continuous planting of lush foliage. Space the plants 2 feet apart for individual plantings.
