Coppertina Ninebark has good-looking foliage from spring to fall. Spring foliage appears in a shiny copper color in the spring that changes to red as the leaves mature. This serrated and lobed three-inch leaves on this deciduous shrub will add an interesting texture to your garden. Its peeling bark will add winter interest once the leaves fall off in autumn.

This shrub also has attractive pinkish-white 5-petaled blossoms that appear in early summer on old wood. Individual flowers form close together to create 1 to 2-inch spheres near the tips of the stems. The flowers mature to form red seed heads. This plant can be grown on USDA hardiness zones 3 to 7 in full sun conditions. It will reach 6 to 8 feet in height and width in a rounded shape at maturity. Ninebarks are native to the eastern portion of the US. This shrub was selected as the 2011 Cut Flower of the Year by the ASCFG.

Coppertina Ninebark Care

Coppertina Ninebark looks best when left to grow naturally. If pruning is desired, prune soon after the flowering period to avoid removing next year’s flower buds. Coppertina ninebark was created by crossing yellow-leaved Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Darts Gold’ and purple-leaved Physocarpus opulifolius Diabolo (‘Monlo’). This plant can be used in mass plantings, as a specimen plant and in perennial or shrub borders.

Coppertina Ninebark Spacing

Space individual plants 7 to 10 feet apart. Coppertina Ninebark needs space for good air circulation to reduce the chance for powdery mildew from forming on the leaves in humid regions.
