Coral Beauty Cotoneaster is a magnificent groundcover with truly four seasons of interest. Commonly known as Coral Beauty Cotoneaster, it begins blooming in late spring with creamy white flowers clustered along the stems. The flowers mature into gorgeous coral-pink berries. The small glossy green leaves are pretty on their own and turn purple and red shades in the fall. The lovely coral berries and fall foliage remain all winter.
Coral beauty is a multi-stemmed shrub that grows quickly to 1 - 2 feet high with a spread of 5 - 6 feet. It is more compact than the species plant and produces more berries. The berries are not palatable to humans, but can be enjoyed by birds in the winter when food is scarce. This shrub is deer resistant and tolerates salt spray, urban pollution, and poor soil. Use it as a groundcover to suppress weeds, stabilize a slope, cascade over a wall, and add beauty and wildlife appeal to natural areas.
Coral Beauty Cotoneaster Care
Grow Coral Beauty in full to part sun for best fall color and fruit production. It does not perform well in hot and humid climates, such as the southeastern states. This shrub is not particular about soil texture or pH level, but it does not tolerate standing water. Water regularly during the first growing seasons, and it will develop drought tolerance.
Pruning is not required, but you can trim Coral Beauty in early spring to control its size and shape. Remove any dieback or damaged stems at the base to keep your shrub healthy.
Coral Beauty Cotoneaster Spacing
This groundcover will need room to spread out. To cover a large area, plant them 4 feet apart, center on center, in staggered rows. As the branches extend outward, they will root at the nodes where they touch the ground.
