Growing Zones
The Coral Bell Azalea is a prolific springtime bloomer that is not to be missed. The trumpet-shaped flowers are a coral-pink hue. The flowers bloom in clusters that completely engulf the shrub. Dark green glossy leaves give the shrub a full form after the beautiful flowers fade. The foliage turns a dark red hue in fall for a final pop of color.
This shrub's upright, bushy form makes a charming foundation planting or specimen in a mixed bed. The foliage stays in place as a broadleaf evergreen, so this plant continues to provide visual interest throughout the year. Azaleas are rather low maintenance, and pollinators visit the flowers for added wildlife value.
Coral Bell Azalea Care
Plant Coral Bell Azalea in full sun and in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Azaleas do best in acidic soil, so test your soil and amend as needed to modify the pH level. Water new plants consistently for the first year. Acclimated plants only need water during a dry spell, but these plants have fine, shallow roots, which can dry out quickly. A thick layer of organic mulch will help the soil retain moisture. Apply a fertilizer formulated for Azaleas or Rhododendrons to support growth and flowers.
Azaleas do not need a lot of pruning but shape as necessary after flowering is complete. Pruning late in the growing season or prior to blooming will not harm the plant, but it may reduce the number of flowers the shrub produces. Move container-grown plants to a protected area for winter. Landscape plants may need protection when grown in windswept areas.
Coral Bell Azalea Spacing
The Coral Bell Azalea grows 36 inches tall and 48 inches wide. Space shrubs 48 inches apart, center on center, for a dense hedge or continuous planting.
