Chamaecyparis pisifera, also known as Cream Ball Japanese False Cypress, is a darling evergreen shrub that has a compact size but is big on style. The scaled foliage has a frond-like appearance and is a grey-green shade with golden yellow highlights. This beautiful conifer is easy to maintain and adds year-round color and texture to a landscape.
This dwarf evergreen will reach about 2 feet tall and wide, making it a natural choice for a low hedge or foundation planting. Use along a walkway or as an accent in a mixed perennial bed or mass planting. The feathery foliage provides a nice contrast when featured in a rock garden, while the spreading tendency makes this plant a wonderful groundcover. Cream Ball Japanese False Cypress is a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Cream Ball Japanese False Cypress Care
Grow in full sun, although this shrub can handle partial shade. Water this evergreen when the top couple of inches of soil dries out. Drench the soil when watering during the first year to establish a robust root system. Soil should be moist but well-drained.
Fertilize this plant using a slow-release, high-nitrogen fertilizer each month during the growing season. Take a break from fertilizing during the winter. Remove damaged growth as necessary, but this compact shrub does not require pruning.
Cream Ball Japanese False Cypress Spacing
The Cream Ball Japanese False Cypress is a dwarf conifer with a naturally rounded shape. This shrub will grow 1 to 2 feet tall and wide. This plant will spread out with time, so space the plants about 2 feet apart.
