Growing Zones
If you are looking for an evergreen shrub that produces a wonderful display in early summer, check out the Crete Rhododendron. Also known as Rhododendron yakushimanum 'Crete, this stunning ericaceous-loving shrub develops a dazzling display of dark pink-purple buds before opening into almost white blooms. A compact rhododendron, ‘Crete’ remains small at around three feet tall, and flowers in May.
Forming a mounding habit of dense evergreen foliage, Crete Rhododendron will even provide some winter structure. When grown in the right place, it needs little looking after and is ignored by the deer. This shrub is winter hardy and suitable for growing in zones 5 through 8. With a compact habit and evergreen foliage, Crete Rhododendron is ideal for adding to a border or foundation planting.
Crete Rhododendron Care
The Crete Rhododendron is happiest when grown in partial sun. It thrives when grown in slightly acidic soil that is fertile and well drained. Frequent irrigation is needed during the first year to encourage a good root system to develop. From then on, it prefers evenly moist, but not saturated or boggy soil. Applying an ericaceous fertilizer in the spring will help encourage more blooms and support plant health.
Pruning is not generally required. Nevertheless, if necessary, you can tidy up stray growth immediately after flowering. To help conserve moisture loss, apply an annual mulch around the base of the shrub.
Crete Rhododendron Spacing
Over time, the Crete Rhododendron can grow to 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. A plant spacing of 2 to 3 feet is about right when growing it as part of a group for a mass of color come May.
