Whether you are in need of a privacy screen or some vibrant, bold color, the Cripps Golden Hinoki Cypress is the ideal plant. This tall evergreen, also known as Chamaecyparis obt. Crippsii grows 10 to 15 feet tall and features fan-like fronds that grow from horizontal branches. The foliage is a bright yellow in the spring. Throughout the growing season, the tips of the branches stay vibrant yellow, but the rest of the foliage gradually transitions to gold and then chartreuse along the interior branches. This graceful tree-like shrub provides color and visual interest all year and is easy to maintain.
This cypress is a fast-growing plant with an upright, pyramidal form that will quickly fill in and make itself at home. The overlapping fern-like fronds and the sheer size of this plant make it an excellent hedge or border. Use the Cripps Golden Hinoki Cypress as a specimen simply to enjoy the striking color display. This perennial is largely pest-resistant and thrives in USDA zones 5 through 8.
Cripps Golden Hinoki Cypress Care
Grow the Cripps Golden Hinoki Cypress in full sun to draw out the golden hues of the foliage. This shrub can live in partial sunlight, but it may not grow as quickly or display intense foliage color. Use moist, rich, well-drained soil that is neutral to acidic. This cypress prefers damp conditions, but it does not like to be soggy. Water this plant when the top few inches of soil dry out. This plant will become drought-tolerant with age.
Trim away dead growth as needed, but this shrub does not require much pruning. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring to support growth.
Cripps Golden Hinoki Cypress Spacing
This tall, upright plant will reach 10 to 15 feet tall and spread 8 to 10 feet wide. Shrubs can be spaced 6 to 8 feet apart to create a dense hedge or privacy planting.
