Crowning Glory™ Purple Reign Pineapple Lily (Eucomis hybrid 'Purple Reign') displays dramatic, dark-tinted foliage crowned by bold, bottlebrush-like blooms in late summer. It grows about 18 to 24 inches tall, lending a striking focal point to beds or containers. Each upright flower spike bears numerous starry florets, offering a one-of-a-kind visual effect. This selection has an exotic look and long-lasting floral display compared with typical lilies.

Its origins trace back to African species, giving it a sturdiness under heat and moderate drought once established. Deer usually avoid these thick leaves, and major disease issues are uncommon. Grow it in mass plantings to create an eye-catching groundcover, or use it as a statement piece in borders and containers. Its unique silhouette also suits cutting gardens and low-maintenance designs.

Crowning Glory™ Purple Reign Pineapple Lily Care

Plant it in well-draining soil and situate it in full sun for the best bloom production. Water regularly during the active growing season, reducing frequency once the plant shows established roots. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release formula in spring to encourage robust growth. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH works well for this hybrid.

Deadheading spent flower stalks keeps the area tidy, although eucomis does not typically rebloom once spikes are gone. Trim any damaged or dead foliage for a polished appearance. In colder climates, mulch around the bulb base to protect it through winter, or bring container-grown specimens indoors. Prune back old growth before the next growing cycle.

Crowning Glory™ Purple Reign Pineapple Lily Spacing

Space plants about 12 to 18 inches apart in beds or mass plantings to allow for mature leaf spread. A single specimen in a border should have at least a foot of open space on all sides. Choose a container at least 10 inches wide for newly planted bulbs, and go larger if you plan to include companion plants or overwinter them indoors.
