The Crusader® Native Hawthorn or Crataegus crus-galli var inermis is a showy and safe shrub that hails from North America. The 5-petaled white flowers bloom in late spring and later turn into red berries. The flowers attract pollinators, while the berries are favored by wildlife. Hawthorns are lovely tree-like shrubs, and many varieties have long, sharp thorns, but the Crusader® Native Hawthorn is a thorn-less cultivar. The lack of thorns makes this variety safe in yards with children and pets and simplifies pruning and maintenance.
Green elliptical foliage has gently serrated edges and puts on a colorful display in the fall. This is a deciduous shrub, and the lovely silver bark will be on full display after the leaves drop in the fall. Rabbits and deer often leave this disease-resistant shrub alone. Grow Crusader® Native Hawthorn in zones 3 through 7.
Crusader® Native Hawthorn Care
This hawthorn prefers full sun and requires at least 6 hours of daily sunlight. Otherwise, this tree is very adaptable. The soil can be wet or dry and acidic or alkaline. Fertilize in the fall to support spring growth. Use a balanced fertilizer intended for flowering shrubs.
Prune the Crusader® Native Hawthorn in the winter when the shrub is dormant. Shape the plant as needed and remove crossed branches. Flowers bloom on new growth, so trimming the plant in the spring may remove new buds and reduce the total number of flowers.
Crusader® Native Hawthorn Spacing
Mature Crusader® Native Hawthorn trees stand about 12 to 15 feet tall and wide. Create a continuous flowering canopy by spacing shrubs 12 to 15 feet apart. Grow this tree in a container to enjoy the charming flowers on a deck or patio space. Use a pot that measures at least 18 inches.
