Growing Zones
Big, double lilac blue flowers show up in late spring or early summer on Crystal Fountain Clematis. And they do resemble a cool fountain, since the flower centers bring to mind a water spray above the petals’ blue backdrop. One rush of the 4- to 5-inch flowers is enough to love, but this clematis also reblooms. In zones 4 through 9, it should bloom in June through September.
Although it boasts big flowers, this clematis plant grows smaller than many. It reaches about 4 to 6 feet high or long, and about 2 feet around. This makes it a great choice for small gardens, containers, trellises, picket fences, or balconies. The giant blue flowers on Crystal Fountain Clematis are friendly to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The leaves and flowers are deer and rabbit resistant.
Crystal Fountain Clematis Care
With its compact habit, this clematis can perform in many areas of the landscape. Like most clematis vines, it fares best if the roots are kept shaded and cool, but the vine gets sun. Accomplish this by planting some low-growing annual flowers at the base of the vine in the container or soil. Place your plant in average to rich soil, adding some compost for nutrients and good drainage. Water your clematis regularly, especially when new and in peak heat or drought. Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer in spring as the plant buds out.
Be sure to plant clematis near an obelisk, trellis, or other structure so it can climb up toward the sun. Although you might have to help train the vine at first, it will quickly wrap around fences or wires with little help. This clematis is in pruning group 2, and blooms on new and old wood. So remove dead or weak stems in late spring, and do any other desired pruning immediately after the first flowering period. Remove faded flowers all season to encourage full reblooming.
Crystal Fountain Clematis Spacing
If planting more than one of these clematis vines together on a fence or trellis, give each room to climb. Space the plants about 2 feet apart.
