The Custard Candy Daylily, or Hemerocallis ‘Custard Candy’, is truly the eye candy of perennials. This plant’s sweet, cream-colored ruffled petals have vibrant maroon centers, bright green throats, and elegant gold ribbons on the outer edges. Although the flowers are of a smaller size with 2 to 3 inches in diameter, their colors, numbers, and contrast against the plant’s arching green foliage make them easily stand out from the crowd. Your flowers will bloom in July and August, rest for a couple of weeks, and come back in September. These perennials are very easy to grow and will reach a mature height of about 20 to 24 inches and a spread of 18 to 24 inches. Your plant will attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

Native to Asia and Central Europe, the fragrant and herbaceous Custard Candy Daylily perennial has a clumping, upright, and moderate growth habit. These tough plants are deer, rabbit, and disease resistant as well as drought tolerant. They can also withstand extreme cold easily. Very little maintenance is required but keep an eye out for gall midges and aphids as these can potentially harm your perennial plants. You can use these plants for edging, borders, containers, mass planting, and rock gardens.

Custard Candy Daylily Plant Care

The Custard Candy Daylily will grow best when getting 5 hours of full sun exposure but will also do well in partial sun. These perennials are adaptable to both dry and moist locations and require average watering. However, you must water more frequently in cases of extreme heat or if your plant is in a container. Well-drained medium soil is ideal, and no particular pH type is needed. You can use a liquid fertilizer once per month.

The best time to prune your perennial is during late autumn. You can remove spent flowers and foliage as you come across them and you can prune flower stalks down after blooming to boost the look of your plant and extend its bloom time.

Custard Candy Daylily Plant Spacing

When planting your Custard Candy Daylily, make sure to leave at least 18 to 24 inches of space in between each plant.
