Growing Zones
The Hosta of the Year for 2020 is Dancing Queen. The golden lime colored swirl of foliage looks amazing when planted with dark burgundy or purple leaved perennials such as Heuchera. Late in the summer, lavender flower scapes pop up to attract hummingbirds. Dancing Queen Hosta is the perfect size for the front of a shady garden bed or container growing.
All hostas are easy to grow, with low maintenance requirements. They are at home in the shaded woodland garden. With extra irrigation, hostas can be grown in partly sunny spots. Hostas with lighter foliage, such as Dancing Queen, are the best candidates for a sunnier lifestyle.
Dancing Queen Hosta Care
Hostas like a consistently moist soil that has good drainage. Mulching the crowns in the late fall with organic compost or leaves helps it to overwinter successfully. A slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soil pH is fine. Fertilizing with a slow release, well balanced feed early in the spring as new shoots emerge will keep the plant vigorous and the color bright.
Dividing of Hostas should be done every 3-4 years. The lower hardiness zones should do the dividing and replanting early when the new growth starts. Hardiness zones with higher numbers will be more successful dividing and replanting in the fall. Old growth at the end of the fall should be removed to protect the crown from possibly rotting. Fresh mulch for the winter is a better insulator.
Dancing Queen Hosta Spacing
Dancing Queen is a smaller Hosta that needs much less space than the bigger leaf varieties. Height of 15- 18 inches and a width of 18 -24 inches. Spacing these plants at 18 inches on center will ensure proper air circulation.
