Big, showy hibiscus flowers are not just for the tropics! Hardy perennial hibiscus like the Hibiscus Dark Mystery bring their blooms to much colder sites. The Dark Mystery blossoms are massive, light pink flowers with a dark red eye and can reach a diameter of 9 inches. The Dark Mystery also features dark maroon, heart-shaped leaves that ensure the shrub stays eye-catching even when no flowers are present.
A superior performer, the Dark Mystery hibiscus is slower to emerge than other perennials in spring but makes up for it with a rapid growth rate, making them an excellent addition for summer and fall interest. As a showstopper, this hibiscus works well as a specimen or focal point. Planted in a row, it also makes an attractive, interesting border. Additionally, it attracts butterflies and bees but offers resistance to deer.
Hibiscus Dark Mystery Care
The Dark Mystery performs best in a site with full sun but can tolerate a bit of shade as long as there is a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight daily. In colder areas, a good layer of mulch is highly recommended for the first winter after planting to ensure roots do not suffer. This hardy hibiscus prefers a planting area with moist, well-drained acidic soil but can tolerate poorer soils. It has medium water needs; check soil around the shrub regularly during the first year or two following planting and whenever there is an extended dry spell.
Use a strong lopper or saw to cut back any stems in early spring before new growth emerges. Deadhead the hibiscus after blooms fade to maintain an attractive, tidy appearance.
Hibiscus Dark Mystery Spacing
The Hibiscus Dark Mystery has a height and spread of about 5 feet, so give these plants a minimum of 3 feet of space on all sides or more if you want to make it a solid focal point or specimen plant. This hardy hibiscus can be grown in a container that is 3 gallons or larger and has ample drain holes.
