Darkest Night™ Butterfly Bush produces large, deeply saturated purple flowers that approach near-black at peak color, creating a strong focal point from summer into fall. Buddleia ‘SMNBDMO’ grows 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, with sturdy upright stems that hold the fragrant flower clusters slightly outward from the plant. Green foliage keeps the shrub visually grounded while the dark blooms supply most of the seasonal color. It has presence without looking wild, which makes it easy to incorporate into both structured plantings and relaxed cottage borders.
Developed as a more refined successor to the classic ‘Dark Knight', Darkest Night™ combines deeper flower color with a controlled, upright habit. The flowers form on new wood and continue through warm weather, drawing butterflies, hummingbirds, and other nectar-feeding pollinators. Established plants tolerate high heat and periods of drought, and deer generally avoid the foliage. Use it behind lower perennials, as a flowering accent near a sunny patio, or in a mixed wildlife border where the fragrant blooms can be viewed throughout summer.
Darkest Night™ Butterfly Bush Care
Plant Darkest Night™ Butterfly Bush in full sun with at least six hours of direct light each day. Average or lean garden soil works well as long as drainage is excellent, especially through winter. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, roughly 6.0 to 7.5, is suitable.
Water regularly during the first growing season, allowing the soil surface to dry somewhat between deep soakings. Once established, irrigation is mainly needed during extended drought or when foliage begins to wilt. Give a light dose of balanced granular fertilizer in early spring if growth has been weak. Apply mulch several inches away from the crown so moisture does not collect around the stems.
Wait until new leaves begin to emerge in spring before pruning, since butterfly bushes can break dormancy later than many neighboring shrubs. Cut stems back by one-half to two-thirds just above healthy buds, and remove weak or damaged branches at their point of origin. Avoid major fall pruning, particularly in colder zones, because leaving the stems intact offers additional protection through winter.
Darkest Night™ Butterfly Bush Spacing
Space plants 3 to 5 feet apart on center for individual specimens or a loose flowering screen. A young shrub can be grown in a sturdy container at least 20 to 24 inches wide, using a coarse potting mix with open drainage holes and allowing the upper portion of the mix to dry before watering again. In cold regions, container roots need more winter protection than plants growing in the ground.
For a dramatic backdrop in perennial beds, combine Darkest Night with ornamental grasses like feather reed grass for vertical contrast. In a wildlife-focused border, pair it with blue star (amsonia) or blazing star (liatris) to extend the purple tones upward and create a low-water, sun-loving planting. For large container planting, use it as the thriller in a 20-inch or larger pot, underplanted with trailing verbena to soften the rim and echo the bloom color.
