When you want depth instead of pastel, reach for Darkest Night™ Butterfly Bush. It carries velvety, near-black purple flower spikes that appear almost ink-dark in late afternoon light. The blooms are large, fragrant, and held upright on a strong, refined framework. It has presence without looking wild, which makes it easy to incorporate into both structured plantings and relaxed cottage borders.
Bred as an improved take on the classic ‘Dark Knight,’ Buddleia 'SMNBDMO' focuses on richer color and a cleaner habit. Expect a mature size of 4–6 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, substantial enough to anchor a sunny bed but not overwhelming. From early summer until frost, it produces a steady procession of blooms that butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees quickly discover. It handles heat, lean soil, and deer browsing with no problem.
Darkest Night™ Butterfly Bush Care
Full sun is non-negotiable for the deepest color and strongest flowering. Choose a site with sharp drainage, especially if winters are cold and wet. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH, around 6.5–7.5, keeps it happiest. Water regularly during the first growing season to build roots, then scale back; this shrub prefers drying out between soakings rather than staying damp.
Because it flowers on new growth, wait until spring when fresh buds appear before pruning. Cut stems back to a framework of healthy buds to encourage sturdy shoots and abundant bloom. In colder zones, resist trimming in fall and allow the plant to rest naturally through winter.
Darkest Night™ Butterfly Bush Spacing
Space plants 3–5 feet apart in landscape design to give the arching flower spikes room to show off. For a dramatic backdrop in perennial beds, combine it with ornamental grasses like feather reed grass for vertical contrast. In a wildlife-focused border, pair it with blue star (amsonia) or blazing star (liatris) to extend the purple tones upward. For large container planting, use it as the thriller in a 20-inch or larger pot, underplanted with trailing verbena to soften the rim and echo the bloom color.
