Growing Zones
This medium height astilbe features summer flowering spikes covered with salmon pink buds that open to reveal fragrant, soft apricot pink flowers. Don’t cut back the flower spikes in the fall. They’ll add winter interest to your gardens. Delft Lace Astilbe has attractive blue-green foliage. Grow this perennial in full to partial sun conditions in USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9. At maturity, this plant will have a 24-inch spread with flower spikes reaching between 24 and 36 inches tall.
Delft Lace Astilbe can be grown in neutral or acidic fertile soil. It has average watering needs once established. It’s deer and rabbit resistant and bees will be attracted to the flowers. Add this plant to border gardens and use it in mass plantings. Its mounded growth habit can act as a filler plant in a container garden. The flowers can be cut to add to bouquets or dried for use in craft projects or dried flower arrangements.
Delft Lace Astilbe Care
The only care this easy to grow astilbe needs is to be consistently watered during dry spells when planted in full sun conditions. If the plant does not get regular watering, it may get leaf scorch or the leaves might dry out and die eventually killing the plant. Fewer flowers will be produced in full shade.
Add a slow-release balanced granular fertilizer or aged compost to the soil before planting for best results. You may also amend the soil with compost each year instead of fertilizing. You can deadhead the spent blooms or leave the flowers and plumes for some winter interest. You can divide the plants every 4 years or so if you would like to give extra plants to a friend or neighbor.
Delft Lace Astilbe Spacing
Space this astilbe 24 inches on center to give it room to reach its full potential.
