Growing Zones
Delta Dawn Coral Bells (Heuchera Delta Dawn) add unique color to shady areas of the garden. Plant it in a container on a shaded patio and let it shine as the thriller, with its large leaves standing out in dark corners. This plant is tough and grows rapidly to fill areas of the landscape that can be otherwise tough to grow in.
Delta Dawn is grown for its foliage, and there is a reason why! The veined leaves change from gold to lime green to an orangish red as the seasons change. It’s like having three plants in one! At a height of about 1 foot and nearly 2 feet around, this pretty heuchera can cover some ground. Plant one in two containers to frame a shady entryway or place several under the shade of trees for low color. It is hardy in USDA zones 5 through 8.
Delta Dawn Coral Bells Care
Plant your coral bells in spring after the last frost or in fall at least a few weeks before the first frost. It can tolerate several soil types, as long as they drain well. If planting your Delta Dawn Coral Bells in a container, be sure the pot and mix have good drainage. The plants prefer consistent moisture, but not soggy soil.
Since they typically grow in shade, the best way to determine how often to water them is to watch how quickly the soil dries out in their planting area. They can handle periods of drought, especially if heat is not at its peak. Each spring, add a layer of compost to the top of the soil around the plant to help enrich the soil. Add a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every spring for container-grown coral bells. The only pruning the plant needs is the removal of damaged or disease foliage each spring.
Delta Dawn Coral Bells Spacing
Space coral bells about 18 to 20 inches apart in a mass planting or border. This gives them some room to grow and breathe.
