Heartstrings Coreopsis has recognizable ferny, threadlike foliage and an exciting flower color. The showy flowers are dark red with a white edging, covering the plant from late spring to the first frost of fall. The color scheme of Heartstrings is easily mixed and matched with other Designer Threads™ coreopsis plants for a fresh and modern spin on traditional summer colors.
Coreopsis is a North American native plant with incredible cold hardiness and drought tolerance once established. Designer Threads™ Heartstrings retains these qualities while also boasting an amazing resistance to most pests and diseases including mildew. This variety readily tolerates deer and rabbit browsing, and rapidly regrows following any damage. Coreopsis delivers a long season of interest while requiring little maintenance or fertilizing. Plant this herbaceous perennial in front of flowering shrubs and taller perennials or add it as a colorful filler plant in a mixed seasonal planter.
Designer Threads™ Heartstrings Coreopsis Care
Coreopsis is a versatile plant that grows in fertile or poor soil. Amend heavy clay soils with compost before planting to provide sufficient drainage. The plant will flower best with at least 6 or more hours of direct sun exposure.
Fertilize annually as the new growth appears in late spring. A granular, slow-release fertilizer will provide nutrition through the active growing period and will support flower production and color retention. Water plants deeply 2-3 times a week to encourage deeper root growth and development of drought tolerance. Mulching with shredded leaves or grass clippings will aid in moisture retention and in suppression of potential weed seeds.
Prune back coreopsis by half its height at mid-summer to encourage another flush of foliage growth and flowering. Deadheading of spent flowers is not required. At the end of the growing season, coreopsis will die back completely to the ground and go dormant. The spent top growth can be left to protect the growing crown during the winter if you garden in zones 5-6.
Designer Threads™ Heartstrings Coreopsis Spacing
Designer Threads Coreopsis has a naturally mounded and compact shape, perfect for planting as a ground cover or in a container. Space plants 22 inches apart, center on center, for garden-grown plants. Container-grown plants will require a pot with at least a 10-inch diameter for plants grown singly.
