A one-time Honorable Mention winner from the American Iris Society, Discovered Treasure is a lovely addition to any late spring garden. It features bicolored pastel petals and a strong upright presence. The stems are self-branching, often supporting 3-4 buds each. Even though this hybrid bearded iris does not rebloom, the flowers are long-lasting in the garden or a vase. The parent plants for Discovered Treasure are ‘Chasing Rainbows’ and ‘Kind Hearted’.
Discovered Treasure retains the large flowers and brilliant coloring that make bearded iris the standouts in a late spring garden. The clean foliage remains long after the plant has finished blooming, offering a lovely glaucous backdrop for later blooming herbaceous perennials. In most climates, the leaves remain evergreen with little dieback. This selection is deer resistant and able to recover from light browsing. The flowers have a light fragrance that is best experienced when planted near a walkway, patio, or deck.
Discovered Treasure German Iris Care
Bearded iris will grow well in a wide range of soil types and sun conditions. It flowers best in full sun, although shade early in the morning or late in the day is perfectly fine. Bearded iris has a rhizomatic tuber that rots in wet soils or locations with seasonal flooding, so ensure the soil drains well. Fertilize iris plants early in the spring with a slow-release, balanced formula for flowering perennials. Avoid applying excess nitrogen, which will encourage heavy foliage development at the expense of flowers.
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage the other buds to open. Carefully cut the flower back to just above the next unopened bud. Late in the summer, the foliage may start to yellow and look a bit unsightly. Do not cut the whole plant to the ground. The tuber requires the foliage to continue making food for a good show of flowers the next season. Clear any spent top growth in early spring as the new growth emerges. Dividing irises on a regular 2-3-year cycle keeps the plants vigorous and promotes optimal blooming.
Discovered Treasure German Iris Spacing
Discovered Treasure is one of the larger bearded irises, reaching 3-4 feet in full bloom with a spread of 1-2 feet. Space plants 12 inches apart when planting in large groups or among other perennials.
