Double Down® Hydrangea, or Hydrangea mac. Double Down® is a stunning shrub loaded with reblooming orbs of magnificent double flowers that bloom in the summer. In contrast to its vivacious blossoms, Double Down® also has dense, glossy green foliage. Reaching heights of 3 to 4 feet with a spread of 3 to 4 feet, the flowers of this incredible hydrangea are a vivid shade of cobalt blue in acidic soils, and lavender to pastel pink in alkaline and neutral soils. These Hydrangeas bloom most heavily in the summer, but can continue blooming and reblooming well into the autumn season. As the flowers of the Double Down® mature, the flowers take on hints of green.
This stunning mophead hydrangea is sure to be a favorite in your garden. Native to Japan, the Double Down® Hydrangea is a rounded variety with a compact, symmetrical habit. They are a favorite of florists and make excellent, long-lasting cut flowers, and since they grow from both old and new wood, they will continue to amaze even after a long winter. They are not deer resistant, and we recommend using a deer repellent, especially on new buds or in areas with high populations of deer.
Double Down Hydrangea Care
The low-maintenance Double Down® Hydrangea thrives in full to partial sun and dappled to full shade. It should be watered regularly until the plant has reached maturity. Established plants will need average water. You should feed your hydrangeas annually, in the spring, with organic fertilizer. To encourage a more vibrant shade of blue, add aluminum to the soil before planting. Hydrangeas prefer moist soil with good drainage. They do not tolerate standing water.
Double Down Hydrangea Spacing
The Double Down® Hydrangea is a favorite of florists and gardeners, and can be incorporated in a variety of floral arrangements and bouquets. They look great planted in shady, compact spaces, or in pots and containers with excellent drainage. Hydrangeas need good air flow to thrive and should be spaced a minimum of 2 feet apart center to center. They are a welcome addition to any small garden.
