Double Play® Princess™ Spirea (Spiraea japonica ‘FARROWSJKO’) refines the classic “Little Princess” form with tighter growth and stronger flower color. From late spring into early summer, rounded clusters of clear, deep pink blooms sit at the tips of nearly every stem. Fresh green foliage provides a clean backdrop and maintains a uniform look through the season. Mature plants reach 18 to 36 inches tall and wide, making this an easy fit at the front of a border or along a walkway. We’ve noticed the bloom color holds better in heat and the plant stays denser with less corrective trimming than older varieties.
Developed by breeder Mike Farrow, this improved selection was chosen for durability and garden performance. It forms a naturally rounded mound and resists common foliar issues that can affect other spirea. Once rooted, it tolerates dry spells and is typically passed over by deer. Use it in mass plantings for a low hedge, mix it into foundation beds, or plant several together for a broad sweep of color. It also adapts well to large containers, where its compact size and repeat flush of growth keep it looking orderly.
Double Play® Princess™ Spirea Care
Plant in full sun for the best flower production, though it will tolerate part sun with slightly lighter bloom coverage. It grows in most average garden soils, provided drainage is good. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, roughly 6.0 to 7.0, supports steady growth, but the plant is not highly sensitive to soil chemistry. Water consistently during the first growing season so roots establish deeply, then irrigate only during prolonged dry periods. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer if soils are poor, but avoid overfeeding, which can reduce flowering.
This spirea blooms on new wood. In late winter or early spring, shear the plant back by about one-third to maintain a compact shape and encourage strong new stems. After the first flush of flowers, a light trim can prompt fresh foliage and occasional rebloom. Remove older interior stems every few years to rejuvenate the plant and improve air circulation.
Double Play® Princess™ Spirea Spacing
Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart on center when creating a low hedge or mass planting. In mixed borders, allow enough room for the rounded habit to develop without crowding neighboring perennials. For containers, select a pot at least 16 to 18 inches wide with good drainage. Pair with sun-loving companions such as catmint, ornamental grasses, or hardy geraniums that thrive in similar light and soil conditions for a balanced, layered display.
