The lush, soft peach flowers of Double Take Peach Quince (Chaenomeles speciosa) surely will make you look again. You will be so glad you added this pretty, thornless shrub as a pinky-peach feature in your landscape. Unlike the fruiting quinces, flowering quinces are grown for their beautiful flowers. The color of Double Take flowers is one of the most stunning varieties yet. The plants grow to nearly 5 feet high and 6 feet wide in an upright shape, so they make perfect border plants or shrubs for screening unsightly structures like air conditioners.
Double Take Peach Quince is an easy-care shrub, too, so why not plant several? The shrub will bloom throughout spring and sometimes again in early fall. This quince can take both heat and drought and grows in zones 5 through 9. There is no need to remove spent flowers, but you can cut the pretty peach blooms for flower arrangements and won't have to deal with thorns. Bees love the early spring flowers.
Double Take Peach Quince Care
Plant Double Take Peach Quince in full sun for best flowering in most climates. In hotter zones, give the shrub a little summer afternoon shade. There is no need to fertilize, but if you like, you can fertilize in early spring as soon as the ground thaws. Most of the plants' flowers appear on wood from two years before, so the less pruning you do, the better. Just water your quince a little extra in its first year.
Double Take Peach Quince Spacing
For a bright peach row or border, plant several Double Take Peach Quince shrubs together. Space the plants 5 to 6 feet from one center to another.
Interesting Fact - These Double Take quinces often will rebloom in the fall for unexpected color late in the season.
