Dragon Prince Cryptomeria is a hybrid of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria 'japonica') and is a unique and compact evergreen shrub for hot, dry conditions. Light green foliage stays colorful throughout the year with little maintenance or water once the plant is established. Plant it as a low border or hedge shrub, especially in spots where you want winter color. You also can feature this Cryptomeria in a container and watch it grow to a natural round shape that reaches over the container's sides.
Dragon Prince Cryptomeria prefers heat up to zone 10b, but is cold hardy to zone 6a. The shrub's rounded appearance and stiff foliage can give a part of your landscape a formal look, especially when planted in pairs on either side of an entryway or structure. The shrub grows to nearly 3 feet high and 4 feet wide. So, it also makes a stunning evergreen groundcover when several are planted together in a group (mass planting). The bottom branches can cover bare ground for appearance and weed control.
Dragon Prince Cryptomeria Care
Place Dragon Prince Cryptomeria in full or part sun for best appearance. Add a little mulch around the base. The drought-tolerant plant needs little watering except after planting and in hot summer. There is no need to prune Dragon Prince Cryptomeria. You can add a balanced granular fertilizer around the base of the plant in early spring of its second year.
Dragon Prince Cryptomeria Spacing
The dwarf Dragon Prince Cryptomeria can stand its own in a natural landscape such as a rock garden or in a container. It's even more enjoyable in groups. Be sure to space the shrubs 3 to 4 feet from one center to another.
