For a small shrub that produces heavenly scented flowers, look no further than the Dream Cloud™ Lilac. Botanically called Syringa patula Dream Cloud™, this dwarf lilac is suitable for the smallest of gardens and the tightest of spaces. It produces sweetly fragrant, pink blooms in May that tower above its green foliage, which in fall turns purple. Growing to only 4 – 5 feet high and wide, it will remain a manageable size.
With an upright and rounded form, this deciduous shrub can be used as a specimen shrub in a border or for forming a low and informal hedge. Compared to some lilacs, it has improved disease resistance against mildew and root rot. The Dream Cloud™ Lilac is a new variety that will fill any outside space with its delicious fragrance.
Dream Cloud™ Lilac Care
For the best blooms and for it to thrive, Dream Cloud™ should be grown in full sun to partial shade. Disliking being allowed to dry out, this shrub prefers moist and relatively fertile, well-drained soil. Regular watering is required until established and during hot and dry spells thereafter. This lilac can cope with an exposed location, just as long as it receives several hours of sunshine a day to encourage its flower formation.
This lilac’s flowers are excellent for cutting and can be used fresh or dry. In order not to remove the following season’s flowers, any pruning must be performed immediately after flowering. If grown in full sun, this plant will benefit from an annual mulch application, which will help conserve moisture.
Dream Cloud™ Lilac Spacing
Over time and depending on the conditions, the Dream Cloud™ Lilac can grow to a maximum height of 4 - 5 feet high by 4 - 5 feet wide. If planting an informal hedge or growing this shrub as part of a group, plants can be spaced 3 to 4 feet apart depending on the desired effect.
