First Editions® DreamScape® Smooth Hydrangea is an exciting new generation of smooth hydrangea, featuring huge ruby-pink flowers, exceptionally heavy blooming, and strong stems that keep the flowers standing tall. Its bold mophead blooms, measuring an impressive 8 to 10 inches across, open a rich ruby pink before gradually aging to a softer parchment pink, providing dynamic color throughout the flowering season.
What really sets DreamScape® apart is how much it blooms. This new Hydrangea arborescens can produce two to three times more flowers per season than other smooth hydrangeas, covering the plant in color while sturdy stems help prevent the blooms from flopping after wind or rain. Dark green, disease-resistant foliage stays clean and attractive throughout the season.
Growing approximately 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, DreamScape® has a full, rounded habit that works beautifully as a specimen plant, in foundation plantings, mixed borders, or planted together for an impressive mass of pink flowers. Hardy in USDA Zones 3-8, this easy-care shrub brings big hydrangea color to gardens across much of the country.
DreamScape® Smooth Hydrangea Care
Plant DreamScape® Hydrangea in full sun to partial shade. In warmer climates, some afternoon shade can help protect the foliage and flowers during the hottest part of the day. Choose a location with fertile, well-drained soil. Acidic to neutral soil, roughly pH 5.5 to 7.0, is appropriate, and unlike bigleaf hydrangeas, its pink flower color is not managed by changing soil pH.
Water deeply and regularly during the first two growing seasons, checking the root zone and watering when the upper inch or two begins to dry. Established plants also appreciate consistent moisture, especially while flowering or during hot weather. Apply a layer of mulch around the root zone to help conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. A balanced slow-release fertilizer can be applied in spring as new growth begins.
Because smooth hydrangeas flower on new wood, prune in late winter or early spring before active growth begins. Shorten the stems by about one-third for a larger framework, or cut more firmly to approximately 6 to 12 inches when rejuvenating an established plant. Deadheading is optional, and mature flower heads can instead be left to develop their parchment-pink color or cut for fresh and dried arrangements.
DreamScape® Smooth Hydrangea Spacing
DreamScape® Smooth Hydrangea grows approximately 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide at maturity. For individual specimen plants or mixed borders, allow approximately 4 to 5 feet of space between plants to accommodate their mature width. For a fuller hedge, flowering border, or mass planting, space DreamScape® Hydrangeas approximately 4 feet apart, center on center. This allows neighboring plants to grow together into a dense display while still providing adequate airflow.
For long-term container culture, start with a sturdy container at least 24 to 30 inches wide with generous drainage and enough weight to support the mature shrub. Container plants need closer moisture monitoring during summer and extra root protection through winter, particularly near the colder edge of its hardiness range.
DreamScape® Smooth Hydrangea Companion Plants
Amsonia is well suited to a sunny or lightly shaded mixed border, where its narrow foliage and spring flowers provide a contrasting form beside DreamScape® once the hydrangea begins its summer display. Sweetspire shares an appreciation for moisture-retentive, slightly acidic soil and can extend flowering interest into a different part of the season. It fits naturally into native-oriented landscapes.
In a very large part-shade container, coleus can occupy the lower planting level around a young DreamScape® Hydrangea, provided both receive regular water and the container drains freely.
