Dressed To Thrill™ Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata ‘SMNBFW’) envelops fences, walls, and trellises in a wave of orange-red trumpet-shaped flowers that appear from spring through summer. Each bloom showcases a bright yellow center, creating a two-tone effect that hummingbirds adore. Reaching up to 30 feet tall with a spread of 6 to 9 feet, this semi-evergreen vine delivers a long season of color while maintaining an appealing foliage backdrop. Its sturdy climbing habit and remarkable adaptability make it a standout choice over other, more unruly vines.

Native to North America and known for its heat and drought tolerance, Dressed To Thrill™ Crossvine handles a range of soil types and lighting conditions, from full sun to partial shade. Its thick tendrils adhere easily to any stable support system, providing quick coverage without becoming invasive. Ideal for pollinator gardens, it draws butterflies and hummingbirds, and its evergreen nature gives year-round structure. Try it for covering mailboxes, pergolas, or large trellises, and consider mass plantings along a fence line for a dramatic show of color.

Dressed To Thrill™ Crossvine Care

Place your crossvine in a spot with full sun to partial shade, ensuring the soil drains well. A slightly acidic to neutral pH works best, though this vine tolerates various conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season, then ease off as it matures and develops better drought resistance. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring can help maintain steady growth and flower production. Consider applying mulch around the base to help retain moisture and moderate soil temperature.

Minimal pruning is needed, but if trimming becomes necessary, do so just after the main spring flush of flowers. Light thinning or removing stray stems helps maintain a tidy shape, and any rejuvenation cuts should focus on removing older growth at the base. In colder climates, mulch around the roots to offer extra insulation. Large containers can also work if they provide ample support and room for root development.

Dressed To Thrill™ Crossvine Spacing

Allow enough room for each vine to spread out—placing them 4 to 6 feet apart when growing as a screen typically works well for robust coverage. For single-specimen plantings or focal points, make sure the structure can handle the vine’s potential 6- to 9-foot spread. If you prefer container growth, choose a pot at least 18 to 24 inches in diameter, as the root system needs substantial space to thrive.
