The Dura Heat River Birch is a superb shade tree. The botanical name is Betula nigra ‘BNMTF’, and this lovely tree has exfoliating bark in shades of white, pink, and cinnamon. The bark adds texture and visual interest. Broad dark green leaves narrow to a point and have gently toothed edges. The foliage puts on a spectacular fall display, turning a rich golden-yellow hue. The Dura Heat River Birch stands 30 to 40 feet tall and 20 to 30 feet wide.
The pyramidal branching form creates a dense canopy to shade a yard or outdoor entertaining area. The lovely bark also makes this tree a stunning specimen or focal point. Train the tree to have a single trunk or allow multiple small trunks to grow. The thin trunks gently arch and can be pruned to give this tree a shrub-like look. Plant several Dura Heat River Birches to create a dense stand for an impressive woodland-inspired look. The Dura Heat River Birch grows in zones 4 through 9.
Dura Heat River Birch Care
This sun-loving tree thrives in full sun. Provide rich, moist, and well-drained soil. The Dura Heat River Birch can live in damp soil but doesn’t like overly wet conditions. Young trees need water for the first couple of growing seasons. Established trees need water during a dry period. Fertilize Dura Heat River Birch trees using a balanced plant food each spring.
Remove dead, damaged, or crossed branches. Remove small trunks to train one main leader if desired. You can also prune lower branches to create a higher canopy if that is your desired look.
Dura Heat River Birch Spacing
Plant Dura Heat River Birch clear of utility wires or other overhead obstructions. Space trees at least 40 feet away from roads, driveways, and buildings. Leave 20 feet between trees for a dense stand of birches.
