Growing Zones
Enjoy an early blueberry harvest with the Earliblue Highbush. This shrub, also known as Vaccinium corymbosum, produces large, light-blue fruit with a sweet taste, and it is often one of the first varieties to ripen. The fragrant white, bell-shaped flowers open about a week earlier than many other blueberry varieties, and the berries are ready to pick by late July. A mature bush can produce 15 to 20 pounds of fruit in a single season.
Earliblue Highbush Blueberry Care
The Earliblue Highbush Blueberry needs full sun. It thrives in acidic, moist but well-drained soil with a high organic content. A thick layer of organic mulch retains moisture and provides nutrition throughout the growing season.
Prune the plant annually after it reaches three years of age. Remove old canes in late winter before new growth appears. Wrap shrubs in landscape fabric, especially in cold or windswept areas, to protect the early spring flower buds.
Growing Earliblue Highbush Blueberry
The Earliblue Highbush Blueberry bush is shorter than many other blueberry cultivars but is more dense, so it’s still a substantial shrub. Mature plants stand 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. Shrubs often produce fruit within 1 to 2 years after planting.
Watering Earliblue Highbush Blueberry
For the first year, water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry to help the plants acclimate. Give the Earliblue Highbush Blueberry bush one inch of water weekly during the growing season. Water more during a dry period.
Feeding Earliblue Highbush Blueberry
Routine fertilization keeps the shrub healthy and growing. Feed the Earliblue Highbush Blueberry bush using a slow-release fertilizer in the spring.
