Growing Zones
The Early Amethyst Beautyberry is an arresting shrub that puts on a beautiful display. The long, elliptic foliage is a bronze hue in the spring and later settles into a bright green. Delicate flowers are a soft pink shade and bloom in clusters during late spring. The flowers are replaced with tiny glossy purple berries by summer’s end. Callicarpa dichotoma is a deciduous shrub, and the berries stay in place, providing attractive color after the leaves fall.
This shrub has a dense, rounded form and upright growth habit. Mix this Beautyberry in a mixed bed or create a hedge or foundation planting. Multiple seasons of color make this shrub a natural focal point. Pollinators will visit the flowers in the spring, while birds will enjoy the berries during the fall and winter. Grow in a container for flexible placement options. Early Amethyst Beautyberry is a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 8.
Early Amethyst Beautyberry Care
Grow in partial shade or full sun, but expect more flowers and berries when grown in higher light levels. Fertile soil with good drainage and an acidic to neutral pH is ideal. Consistently water this plant, especially during the first growing season. This shrub will be more drought-tolerant once it has settled in.
Beautyberry is not a heavy feeder, but a dose of balanced fertilizer in the spring will get this shrub off to a good start. Cut this plant back in late winter or early spring to promote new growth and maintain a more compact and bushy look.
Early Amethyst Beautyberry Spacing
At 5 to 6 feet tall and 6 to 7 feet wide, the Early Amethyst Beautyberry is a large perennial shrub. Space shrubs 7 to 8 feet apart to create a full planting or feature one plant in a 12-inch container.
