Growing Zones
With its buds opening as early as May, the Early Evolution Hydrangea blooms for months on end. Botanically known as Hydrangea paniculata Early Evolution, this hydrangea remains compact and is low maintenance. The white flowers produced in early summer slowly evolve to dark pink in the fall. This hydrangea is loved by pollinators and looks stunning when picked as a cut flower.
Staying a compact 24 inches high and wide, this Early Evolution Hydrangea is ideal for growing in a container or edging a path or border. Native to Asia and America, this cultivar has been bred to flower especially early and is great to add some early season color to the garden. Requiring little care, Early Evolution is a great value as it will add changing color and interest for months.
Early Evolution Hydrangea Care
The Early Evolution Hydrangea prefers to be grown in rich, fertile, free-draining soil that is slightly acidic. It can tolerate either full sun or partial shade but does prefer to be out of any drying winds. Requiring a consistently moist soil, frequent watering is required until this plant is established; make sure to water always during hot and dry spells. To keep this plant healthy and strong and to encourage its stunning flowers, a slow-release general fertilizer can be applied in spring.
Pruning this shrub is relatively simple. In spring, the spent flower heads can be cut back to a pair of new buds, and any dead or broken stems should be removed. If container grown, plants can be given some protection by placing them under cover before the first frost arrives
Early Evolution Hydrangea Spacing
Growing to a maximum height and spread of 24 - 28 inches, Early Evolution is ideal for growing in a large container with a diameter of around 12 inches. If planting en masse, a spacing of 24 inches between plants is recommended.
