The large flowers of the Earlybird™ Blue and White Columbine are some of the first to emerge in the spring and help set the tone for the growing season. The spurred blooms have blue petals surrounding an inner row of white petals with bold yellow stamens in the center. The Aquilegia hybrida blooms from early spring through late summer. This upright filler boasts delicate green foliage.
This Columbine has a compact growth habit and will max out around a foot tall, so place it near the front of a bed to ensure the flowers are visible. This perennial looks lovely in borders, mass plantings, or containers. The beautiful blooms also make excellent cut flowers. The Earlybird™ Blue and White Columbine grows as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 9.
Earlybird™ Blue and White Columbine Care
Plant this Columbine in full sun to part shade. The flowers last longer with some shade, so find an area that does not receive intense afternoon light. With moderate water needs, wait until the top couple of inches of soil dry out before watering. New plants need consistently moist soil, but established plants need water about once a week. Soil should be well-draining and mildly acidic. Feed Columbine once a month during the growing season using water-soluble plant food.
Deadhead or remove spent flowers to maintain a neat look. Removing the flowers before they go to seed will also prevent the plant from self-seeding. Trim the majority of the growth back in the fall. Leave the lowest level of foliage to help protect the roots against winter weather. Remove any dead growth in the spring.
Earlybird™ Blue and White Columbine Spacing
Expect your Earlybird™ Blue and White Columbine to reach 9 to 12 inches tall and spread out just as far. Place plants 9 to 12 inches apart to create a continuous planting or feature one plant in a 12-inch container.
