A firm favorite of gardeners, Columbine or Granny’s Bonnet as they are affectionately known, is a low-maintenance perennial that flowers in spring. The Earlybird™ Red Yellow Columbine, as its name suggests, displays deep red and yellow blooms from spring until early summer. Botanically named Aquilegia Earlybird™ Red Yellow, this perennial forms a soft mound of delicate, green foliage, which its blooms grow upon.
Loved by pollinators and resisted by deer and rabbits, this plant truly is a winner. Native to the Northern hemisphere, this perennial will die back later in the season to reappear the following spring. Perfectly suited for cottage, informal or woodland planting schemes, this Earlybird™ can be grown in containers or directly in the ground.
Earlybird™ Red Yellow Columbine Care
As a woodland plant, aquilegias are best grown in partial or dappled shade. Although relatively unfussy, columbines prefer neutral and moist, but free-draining soil to thrive. If grown on fertile soil, columbines do not require supplementary fertilizing. However, if growing Earlybird™ Red Yellow Columbine in relatively poor soil, a monthly, balanced liquid feed can be beneficial. Applying a layer of garden compost or other organic matter in spring will help keep the soil moist and keep any weeds at bay.
After flowering, the faded blooms can be left to provide interesting seed heads or deadheaded. In spring, any dead or damaged foliage can be removed from the base of the plant for new growth to take its place. The sap of columbines can be an irritant, and thus gloves are advisable when handling this plant.
Earlybird™ Red Yellow Columbine Spacing
The Earlybird™ Red Yellow Columbine grows to a height of 9-11 inches by 8-12 inches wide. If planting more than one of these stunning perennials, a spacing of 10-12 inches between plants is recommended.
