Twisting, zig‑zag branches give Egao Corkscrew Camellia (Camellia × vernalis ‘Egao Corkscrew’) unforgettable winter architecture. Each curve is accented by 3‑inch soft‑pink, semi‑double blooms from late autumn into early January. The dark, glossy evergreen leaves remain tidy year‑round, framing the flowers and later the distinctive stems when petals drop. Eventually reaching 6–8 feet tall and wide, this slow grower suits city courtyards as well as woodland borders, adding height without overwhelming nearby plantings. Garden designers prize its sculptural form for focal containers and espalier against sheltered walls.

Originating as a sport of the Japanese hybrid ‘Egao’, this cultivar keeps the parent’s reliable bloom schedule yet adds corkscrew stems, improved heat tolerance, and resistance to deer. Once established, the shrub handles brief drought and coastal humidity with equal poise. Birds seek shelter in its dense canopy, while the long flowering window provides nectar to late‑season pollinators. Use Egao Corkscrew Camellia as a single specimen, in pairs flanking entryways, clipped as a loose hedge, or massed beneath tall pines where filtered light meets acidic soil.

Egao Corkscrew Camellia Care

Plant in moist, well‑drained, organically enriched soil with a pH between 5.0 and 6.5. Morning sun with afternoon shade or all‑day dappled light produces the richest foliage and preserves bloom color; avoid harsh western exposure in Zones 8–9. Water deeply every week the first growing season, then reduce to twice‑monthly once established. In early spring apply a slow‑release, acid‑formulated fertilizer just outside the drip line.

After flowering, remove any spent blooms and thin crowded interior twigs to reveal the twisted framework; delay major shaping until early spring to protect developing buds. Shearing is unnecessary—selective cuts maintain the plant’s natural character. Container specimens in Zone 7 should be moved to a sheltered porch during severe cold snaps, keeping soil slightly moist but never waterlogged.

Egao Corkscrew Camellia Spacing

For an informal screen, set plants 5 feet apart on center; allow 8–10 feet between shrubs when used as individual accents. A single young plant fills a 20‑inch pot; upgrade to a 24‑ to 30‑inch container after three years to accommodate the expanding root ball and to showcase those signature contorted stems.
