Growing Zones
That’s right. You will love the spark that Electric Love Weigela adds to your landscape. Known for their easy care, pollinator attraction, and numerous colors, weigelas are popular shrubs for all kinds of landscapes. Electric Love is a compact weigela, growing to only about 2 feet high and 3 feet wide. Another difference with this weigela and most shrubs is its purely unique color of vibrant red blooms against deep green, nearly bronze leaves.
This little weigela is hardy in zones 4 through 7, so it grows in most climates. Its spot in the sun will help add to its attraction for bees and butterflies. Be sure to plant this weigela where you can see those visitors and enjoy its summer and fall color. Since it’s so easy to care for, you can plant several of these shrubs as a shockingly red mass planting or a low garden bed border. This little beauty also grows well in containers. It’s a one-of-a-kind landscape plant.
Electric Love Weigela Care
Weigelas love sun, but can take partial shade and still bloom. Give them no more than 4 hours of shade if possible, and make it summer afternoon shade in hotter zones. They can grow in many different types of soil and pH ranges, but prefer a loose, fertile, well-draining loam. Dig a hole about twice the width of the container the plant comes in and place it in the ground so that the top edge of the rootball is at or slightly above ground level.
Water your weigela immediately and regularly, especially in its first year. But water only when the soil dries out; don’t let them sit in soggy soil. Add some mulch around the bottom root zone of the plant (but not up against it) to help hold in moisture. If growing in a container, choose one that will account for a few years of growth, or about 8 inches wider than the root ball. You can give weigela an application of slow-release fertilizer once in late winter or early spring.
Electric Love Weigela Spacing
Give Electric Loe Weigela room to spread when planting with other shrubs or near structures. Place each weigela in a mass planting or border about 2 to 3 feet apart.
