Festuca cinerea Elijah Blue, commonly known as Elijah Blue Fescue Grass, is a small ornamental grass that provides superb texture and color with minimal care. It has finely textured, silvery blue foliage that is semi-evergreen. It sends up tall plumes of flowers in summer that turn tawny colored, an excellent contrast to the blue foliage. Established plants are extremely drought tolerant and fuss free. This grass fits in nicely in Asian themed gardens or modern xeriscaping.
Elijah Blue grows in a tight mound, 6 – 10 inches wide and high. It readily self-seeds to fill in a bare area. It is drought tolerant, heat and humidity tolerant, cold hardy to zone 4, and deer resistant. Plant these in groups in rock gardens, in dry streambeds, and along garden paths. This grass also works very well as a groundcover for dry areas.
Elijah Blue Fescue Grass Care
This grass flourishes in full sun. It is widely adaptable to poor and fertile soils, as long as the soil drains well. Water this grass weekly to establish its roots over the first growing season, and then reduce supplemental water over the summers. Overwatering can shorten its lifespan. Mulch with compost to feed the soil; however, skip the fertilizer, which can weaken this grass.
Shear back Elijah Blue in early spring to make room for new growth. You can also cut off the flower spikes to prevent self-seeding.
Elijah Blue Fescue Grass Spacing
For mass planting, space these plants approximately 8 inches apart. Divide grasses in early spring or fall to propagate new plants and rejuvenate clumps, which tend to die out in the center after 3-5 years.
