The evergreen and intricate leaves of the Emerald Magic® Meserve Holly make it a valuable shrub with a wide variety of uses. Botanically known as Ilex x meserveae Emerald Magic®, this holly produces small green-blue leaves with short spines. The foliage takes on a gentle burgundy tinge as the temperatures fall, heightening its winter interest.
A hardy specimen, the Emerald Magic® Meserve Holly is suitable for growing in zones 5 to 9. Its compact form of 2 to 4 feet high and dense foliage make it a favorite for foundation plantings and low hedging. This Japanese holly is low maintenance and rabbit resistant.
Emerald Magic® Meserve Holly Care
This male holly thrives when it is planted in fertile and moist soil that is slightly acidic and free draining. It can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. Deep and regular watering for the first few growing seasons will help it establish a good root system. Fertilize with a general slow-release feed in early spring.
The Emerald Magic® Meserve Holly naturally forms a rounded shape. Little pruning is needed, but can be performed in late winter if required.
Emerald Magic® Meserve Holly Spacing
When mature, the Emerald Magic® Meserve Holly can grow to a size of 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. A spacing of 3 to 4 feet apart will allow its shape to be appreciated.
