Growing Zones
Few plants rival the Emerald ‘n’ Gold euonymus for its versatility and vigor as a variegated groundcover or hedge. The leaves offer year-round interest. During the growing season they are dark green edged with gold. The foliage then develops tinges of pink during the fall and winter followed by an attractive yellow flush of growth in the spring.
Also known as wintercreeper, the plant is dense and forms a bushy mat by sending out roots where stems touch the ground. Its winter color makes it a stellar addition to fill in a landscape with all seasons in mind. With its low-growing habit, the Emerald ‘n’ Gold makes an excellent low border. If planted against a fence or other support, it can even be utilized as a climbing plant.
Emerald n Gold Euonymus Care
This plant thrives in a broad range of soil types but struggles if the ground is too wet. This euonymus cultivar also grows well in shaded or sunny conditions, but achieves the best color possible in the sun. If grown in full, hot sun make sure that the soil has some moisture retention abilities or work plenty of organic matter into the planting site.
Pruning needs for this plant vary depending on how you want to use it. As a creeping groundcover, simply cut off any stems that look unattractively out of place. It responds well to pruning for the sake of shaping. To encourage a particularly bushy habit, cut back growth by a third in the spring Also, cut back any stems with growth that has reverted to plain green growth as you notice them.
Emerald N Gold Euonymus Spacing
This plant grows one to two feet tall with a spread of three to four feet. Space plants three feet apart to form a border or hedge. Give them four feet of space or more if you are using them as a specimen plant or in a foundation planting.
