Emerald Snow® Semi-dwarf Loropetalum gives the garden a fresh white-flowering option and maintains an elegant evergreen presence. Loropetalum chinense 'Shang-white' covers its glossy green foliage with pure white fringe flowers in spring, and may flower again more lightly through summer and fall. Lime-green new growth keeps the plant looking clean and bright even between bloom cycles. We find it especially useful where a dark foundation planting needs a bright contrast.
This evergreen Chinese fringe flower has a naturally layered, arching habit that stays compact at about 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. It is deer resistant, pest and disease resistant, and slower growing than many larger loropetalums. Use it as a low hedge, slope planting, entry accent, mixed border shrub, or a polished container specimen near a porch. The white flowers also make it easy to blend with both warm and cool color palettes.
Emerald Snow Loropetalum Care
Plant Emerald Snow® Loropetalum in full sun to part shade, with the strongest flowering usually coming from brighter sites. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral to acidic pH, and it can show stress in alkaline ground. Avoid soggy planting areas, especially in clay, since loropetalum roots need steady moisture without standing water.
Water newly planted shrubs deeply whenever the upper few inches of soil begin to dry, giving the root ball a full soak instead of light daily watering. Once established, Emerald Snow® can handle lower water, but dull foliage or curling leaf edges are signs that it needs attention during heat. Feed in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving shrubs, then refresh mulch to help keep the root zone cool. In zone 7, plant it away from harsh winter wind and mulch before hard freezes.
Little pruning is needed because the plant naturally forms a neat, layered shape. To refine the outline, trim right after the main spring bloom so new buds are not removed later in the season. Remove any dead or crossing branches as they appear. Grow container plants in pots that drain freely through winter.
Emerald Snow Loropetalum Spacing
Space Emerald Snow® Loropetalum 3 to 4 feet apart for a connected low hedge or mass planting, and give single shrubs at least 4 feet of width for their natural form. For containers, start with a 16- to 20-inch wide pot for young plants and shift into a larger planter as the roots fill in. Container-grown shrubs dry faster than in-ground plantings, so check moisture more often during summer and during windy winter weather.
Pair Emerald Snow® Loropetalum with abelias, distylium, Indian hawthorn, and juniper bushes for sunny foundation beds and low-maintenance mixed borders. These companions handle bright exposure and well-drained soil, while their different foliage textures give the planting dimension. For seasonal container color, use calibrachoa, petunias, verbena, or lantana around the edge of a large planter where the loropetalum can stay as the upright evergreen anchor.
