- Full Sun (At Least 6 Hours Of Direct Sunlight)
- Mature Height 3 - 4 Feet
- Mature Spread 3 - 4 Feet
- Growing Zones 4 - 9
- Use As A Thriller In Containers
As a compact shrub, the Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea is hugely versatile in its use. Forming a mass of attractive foliage that is burgundy when young and green when it matures, it remains less than four feet when fully grown. In late spring, it produces a dazzling array of pink flowers, which are loved by pollinators and can even rebloom over the summer months. Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea is a tough and hardy shrub that is low maintenance.
Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea is deer resistant and suitable for rural landscapes. A deciduous shrub, it dies back over winter before new growth appears in spring. It is exceptionally cold hardy and can grow well in zones 4 to 9. Due to its compact form, Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea is suitable for growing in beds or borders, or even a large container.
Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea Care
For the best blooms, plant Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea in full sun. It can, however, tolerate some partial shade. Spireas hate wet feet so a free-draining, but fertile soil is recommended. On planting and until established, water this shrub regularly. Once this shrub has settled its roots in, it can tolerate some drought, but prefers its soil to be kept moist. Although it is a light feeder, a slow-release, general fertilizer can be applied in early spring to encourage a mass of flowers.
After flowering, the Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea can be lightly cut back to the next set of leaves. In winter, any dead stems can be removed, and the plant can be cut back harder if necessary, ready to produce new growth in spring.
Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea Spacing
Over time, the Empire® Ice Dragon™ Spirea can reach a maximum of 4 feet tall by 4 feet wide. If planting more than one out as a group a spacing of 3 to 4 feet is recommended between plants. If growing this spirea in a planter, a pot size of 8 inches wider than its current root ball is advisable.

Plant Addicts Warranty - 1 Year (Extra Purchase Required)
We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. Hungry animals, drought, poor soil conditions, over watering, diseases & pests are all good examples of what can cause plants to die. The Plant Addicts Warranty is a 1 year warranty protecting you from all of the unknowns and will replace your plant if something were to happen to it.
The warranty is purchased on a per plant basis and must be purchased at the same time as the plant(s). We will cover 100% of the price of the plant, but the warranty does not cover shipping costs. SImply let us know if your plant has died within 1 year of receiving it and we will get you a new one shipped out as soon as possible (depending on the time of the year and availability). We may ask for photos for documentation purposes, but we try to make the process as easy as possible.

Plant Shipping
Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.
Winter to Early Spring
We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.
Summer
If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.
Fall into Winter
We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!
