Enchiladas Hosta is an attractive foliage perennial featuring glossy, heart-shaped leaves with subtly rippled, dark-green with gold variegation in the center of the foliage. The fragrant, lavender flowers are magnets for hummingbirds. Enchiladas is one of the most fragrant hostas available and continues looking great even toward the end of summer. This cultivar is a sport of the popular ‘Avocado’ Hosta and in the family of the award-winning ‘Guacamole’ Hosta.
Enchiladas is a low-maintenance, top-performing foliage perennial. It’s not too fussy and will grow well in a variety of conditions, but planting it in an area that receives brighter light will give this hosta the best coloration. Enchiladas Hosta grows 10 - 24 inches in height and 28-32 inches wide in Hardiness Zones 3-8.
Enchiladas Hosta Care
Enchiladas will grow in a variety of light conditions from shade to sun. It has average water requirements and prefers being planted in moist, well-draining soils that are rich in organic matter, with a slightly acidic soil pH. Hostas will not grow as robustly when planted in clay soils. If you are noticing the soil dries out too quickly, add a thin layer of garden compost and a layer of natural mulch to help maintain moisture in the soil. All Hostas are susceptible to slugs and browsing animals, particularly deer, so spray a natural repellent occasionally to deter them. You can also plant sharp-tasting herbs such as allium nearby to help deter deer from browsing the fabulous foliage.
If you notice faded leaves, brown tips, or dull leaves, your Hosta may be receiving too much direct sunlight. Trim off any dried or wind-damaged leaves to keep the plant looking fresh and neat. You can split Enchiladas Hosta into more plants in the fall. Hostas make for great container plants as long as the planter has good drainage. Apply a well-balanced, slow-release fertilizer after planting or in the spring; then reduce fertilization towards the end of summer.
Enchiladas Hosta Spacing
Enchiladas looks lovely planted as a focal point in mixed perennial borders or planted in groupings in a dappled sun area. This Hosta will brighten up a shady spot is a woodland garden. Space plants approximately 28 inches apart when planted in drifts.
