Growing Zones
If you are looking to add some winter interest to your garden, this Enci Mugo Pine may fit the bill perfectly. A slow-growing conifer, the Enci Mugo Pine develops dense lush mounds of deep green needles. Being dwarf, it tends to only reach 2 to 4 feet high and 4 to 6 feet across, making it ideal for smaller gardens and landscapes. As an evergreen, it will keep its color all year round.
The Enci Mugo Pine is easy to grow and care for. Not only is it resistant to disease, but also is unpalatable to deer. Once established, this dwarf pine can tolerate dry conditions and is generally low maintenance. Forming a low-growing mound of evergreen foliage, the Enci Mugo Pine is perfect for creating a low hedge or for adding structure to a rock garden or border.
Enci Mugo Pine Plant Care
The Enci Mugo Pine is not a fussy shrub as it thrives in any well-drained soil in full sun. It does, however, dislike a soggy or saturated soil, so it is best to avoid any sites prone to waterlogging. Frequent irrigation is required for the first season or two, after which watering is generally only required during prolonged dry spells. Applying a fertilizer is not generally required, unless grown in a container to help replace any lost nutrients.
To help keep its appearance neat and promote lush growth, you can lightly prune the ‘candles’ in spring. When grown in a container, more frequent watering during the growing season is needed to prevent the soil from completely drying out.
Enci Mugo Pine Plant Spacing
Over time, the Enci Mugo Pine can spread to 4 to 6 feet wide. You can plant this shrub at a spacing of 4 to 5 feet for well-defined mounds or closer to form an informal hedge.
