Eureka Lemon Tree (Citrus x limon 'Eureka') offers fragrant flowers, evergreen foliage, and tart, juicy lemons in the home garden. Its vivid yellow fruit has the classic lemon flavor that brightens lemonade, fish, and vinaigrettes. Fruit can appear in flushes across much of the year, with a fall-to-winter harvest period. The lemons have thin skins and few seeds, making them easy to zest and squeeze.

Also known as Garey's Eureka, this tree has glossy dark green leaves and bronze-purple new growth for year-round interest. It grows upright with a spreading habit, reaching 10 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 15 feet wide at maturity. Spring flowers attract bees and birds, and the tree is self-pollinating. Grow it as an edible focal point or place it in a container near an entryway.

Eureka Lemon Tree Care

Choose a warm, sheltered location in full sun with 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily, preferably away from cold winds, since Eureka is particularly sensitive to freezing temperatures. Plant in spring after frost danger passes in well-drained sandy loam or loamy soil with a slightly acidic pH of approximately 6.0 to 6.5. Raise the planting area if heavy clay causes water to collect. Position the root crown at or slightly above the surrounding grade, and allow 10 to 15 feet between trees to accommodate their spreading branches.

Eureka needs relatively little structural pruning, so concentrate on removing damaged wood, crossing limbs, and rootstock suckers after frost danger has passed. Avoid excessive canopy thinning that exposes branches to sunburn.

Growing Eureka Lemon Tree

Eureka Lemon Tree is known for producing multiple crops annually, with its principal harvest in late winter through early summer and additional lemons developing during other seasons in favorable climates. Grafted trees may begin bearing within 2 to 3 years. One tree is sufficient for fruit production because Eureka is self-fertile, although indoor flowers may benefit from hand-pollination. Harvest lemons once they reach a useful size and develop a glossy yellow rind, clipping the stems or gently twisting the fruit to avoid damaging branches. The strongly acidic juice is excellent for marinades, dressings, lemon bars, and preserving, while the aromatic peel is great for zesting and candying.

Growing Eureka Lemon Tree in Containers

Eureka's spreading branches need more room than those of many compact citrus selections, so begin with an approximately 18-inch-wide container with substantial drainage holes and a stable base. Use a coarse citrus potting mixture, and gradually increase to a 20 to 25-gallon planter as the root system develops, repotting in spring when roots become crowded or water passes through unusually quickly. Move the tree indoors before temperatures approach freezing, placing it beneath a strong grow light or beside a south-facing window where it can receive abundant direct light.

Watering Eureka Lemon Tree

Eureka requires fairly consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development, so soak the root zone thoroughly whenever the upper 2 inches of soil begin to dry, checking young trees and summer containers more frequently than established landscape specimens. Drooping foliage and dry soil indicate a need for water.

Feeding Eureka Lemon Tree

Because Eureka can flower and develop fruit during several periods of the year, feed with a citrus-specific fertilizer containing nitrogen, magnesium, iron, and other micronutrients, dividing applications through spring and summer according to the label. Pale leaves, particularly yellow tissue between green veins, may indicate a nutrient deficiency or unsuitable soil pH, so check growing conditions before increasing the fertilizer rate.

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter
