The tall, narrow foliage of the Carex EverColor® ‘Everglow,’ also known as Carex oshimensis, comes to a point and features a green center stripe bordered by white with hints of orange along the outer edges. This upright, mounded ornamental grass is low maintenance and can be used as ground cover, in borders, or as an accent or edging, in mass plantings, or containers. However this plant is used, it will add visual interest and texture to the space. The variegated foliage can reach up to 18 inches tall, making this plant an excellent addition to the middle of garden beds or the center of a container.
Carex requires very little care once it is established. If its striking good looks and easy-care sensibilities weren’t enough of a reason to find a spot in your landscape for this plant, consider that it is heat-tolerant and deer-resistant. This plant can handle the high temperatures of summer and will not entice hungry deer into your space. Carex oshimensis is native to Japan and grows as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 9.
Carex EverColor® ‘Everglow’ Plant Care
Plant the Carex EverColor® ‘Everglow’ in part sun to shade. This plant needs 4 to 6 hours of sunlight daily to thrive, but it must be kept away from the intense noontime sun. Keep the soil evenly moist and water when the top several inches of soil dry out. Use well-draining soil because this plant does not like to be soggy.
Apply a slow-release fertilizer once a year during the spring to promote new foliage. This plant does not require much pruning and simply remove any dead growth as it appears.
Carex EverColor® ‘Everglow’ Plant Spacing
The Carex EverColor® ‘Everglow’ grows 12 to 18 inches tall and is just as wide. These plants can be grown as close as 10 inches from the center of one plant to the center of its neighbor. Grouping the plants close together creates a lush abundance of leafy foliage, but if you want each plant to stand on its own, space plants at least 14 inches apart.
