Everlasting Amethyst Hydrangea, or Hydrangea mac. Everlasting Amethyst is a medium-sized shrub with tall, long-lasting, summer blooms of fuchsia to violet, depending on the acidity of the soil where they are planted. As the season progresses, the mammoth globes of flowers transform in color to reddish-pink with bright-green accents to fully lime green. The variable colors of the Everlasting Amethyst Hydrangea contrast beautifully with its glossy, toothed, dark green foliage. Reaching heights of 24 to 30 inches with a spread of 24 to 30 inches, this variety of hydrangea makes an excellent cut flower and has an incredibly long vase life.
Native to Japan, the Everlasting Amethyst Hydrangea is a compact, upright variety with a symmetrical, rounded habit. They can be dried and preserved for both the flowers and foliage and used in a lovely winter bouquet. They are low-maintenance to grow and bloom on both old and new wood.
Everlasting® Amethyst Hydrangea Care
The Everlasting Amethyst Hydrangea should be planted in areas with milder climates. It prefers partial sun, and should be watered deeply and regularly, especially until it is well-established. Mature plants need average water. You should feed your hydrangeas every year with organic fertilizer. They prefer moist soil with excellent-drainage. Hydrangeas require minimal pruning, and it is best to wait until after they bloom to trim them for shape or size.
You can control the color of Everlasting Amethyst Hydrangeas by changing the soil pH. For deeper purple and blue shades, soil pH should be below 5.5. For lighter lavenders and pinks, plant in alkaline soil with a pH of 7.0 or above. If you choose to manipulate the color of your hydrangeas, with aluminum sulfate or phosphate, it should be done in the spring before the plant blooms.
Everlasting® Amethyst Hydrangea Spacing
The Everlasting Amethyst Hydrangea is a favorite of florists and growers and can be incorporated into a variety of flower beds and arrangements in need of dimension and color. Hydrangeas are exceptional when planted in shady borders or in containers. This Hydrangea is an excellent choice for smaller, more compact spaces. Hydrangeas need good air flow, and should be planted at least 2 feet apart to give them space to breathe.
